Over the last several years, as Virgin has expanded, so have our ideas for treating the people who worked for us well, and for considering the environment.

At yesterday’s Empire Fintech conference in New York, I was asked to speak on the topic of “How to Build a Great Company,” bringing in my perspective from my past life as a big company CEO and now as a start-up CEO at Ellevest.

Six months into her new role as head of the accounting division for a global transportation company, Sarah was frustrated. She had worked hard to earn her new position and didn’t understand why her boss had just given her a lukewarm review, faulting her leadership skills. She had never received anything but high praise from professors at the university she attended, and as she worked her way up from an entry-level position into increasingly more responsible roles in this company. If there is one thing Sarah knows how to do, it is to set a challenging goal and work hard and smart until she achieves it.

Everyone wants to advise you on product. No one wants to advise on management. But business and management doesn't change as much. It can be passed along and so in that spirit, I'd like to tell you:

A few weeks ago I read about the “right to disconnect” – a new French labor law that mandates companies of a certain size establish offline hours where staff cannot send or respond to emails. I don’t like this law, but not for the reason you may think. The French government constructed it with good intentions, but I believe it’s misguided because the hours during which people disengage from email depend entirely on how they work.

Try to ignore the misplaced apostrophe in PC’s Limited. It was the 80s. I was a kid in a rush to make it in the world of business. I was breaking rules I didn’t know existed (and grammar was just one of them). :)
